Descaling your shower head: Our tips & tricks for a thorough cleaning
Enjoy a pleasant showering experience and feel the warm water like a rain shower on your skin. But over time, the water jet and water pressure from the shower head noticeably decrease and some of the nozzles only drip? This is usually due to annoying limescale deposits that accumulate on the shower head and seals. Instead of buying a new shower head right away, you can easily descale your existing one. This article explains why this process should be an integral part of your cleaning routine and how to go about it.
Descaling a shower head: How limescale forms in the shower
Limescale deposits are primarily caused by the water hardness in the respective region, which depends on the lime content of the water. In areas with limestone, the lime is transported along with the water in the pipe system. As soon as you use the fittings and water is heated or evaporates, the mineral remains behind and gradually forms a white crust on shower heads, pipes and the like. The more limestone the water contains, the faster limescale forms on your sanitary fittings.
Every time you use your shower head, tiny limescale residues are left behind. If too much limescale accumulates on the nozzles of the shower head over time, it obstructs the water flow. The consequences are splashing water, uneven water pressure and uneven surfaces where bacteria and germs can easily accumulate. This not only affects the appearance and functionality of your shower head, but also your health. Regular descaling remedies this problem and extends the lifespan of your shower head.
Which agents are suitable for descaling?
Before you start, you should first get the right cleaning utensils and cleaning agents so that you don't damage the shower head when descaling. Aggressive solutions and incorrect cleaning cloths can impair the function of your shower head or destroy its elegant appearance. Therefore, use exclusively:
- Home remedies such as citric acid, baking soda, dishwasher tabs or vinegar. These are an inexpensive and sustainable choice.
- Gentle cleaning agents specially designed to remove limescale. These are stronger and more targeted, but are more expensive than common home remedies.
- Soft cloths such as cotton cloths and cleaning rags that do not leave scratches.
However, avoid:
- Cleaning agents with chlorine bleach, hydrochloric acid or acetic acid, as these can damage your shower heads.
- Steam cleaners: High temperatures can damage the shower head.
- Hard sponges, brushes or abrasive cleaning tools such as microfibre cloths lead to micro-scratches, causing the shower head to lose its shine.
Instructions: Step by step to a clean shower head
Descaling with removal
The easiest way to descale a shower head or hand shower is to remove it. Most models can simply be unscrewed from the shower hose. This allows you to work without space restrictions and enjoy maximum flexibility.
-
Dismount the shower head.
-
Carefully remove loose limescale and dirt with a soft toothbrush. Avoid the nozzles to prevent damage.
-
Fill a container with a vinegar-water or citric acid-water solution and place the shower head in it so that it is completely covered by the liquid.
-
Leave the solution to act for 1 to 2 hours. Move the shower head back and forth several times so that the solution can penetrate deeply.
-
Finally, rinse the shower head thoroughly with clear water.
-
Screw the shower head back on and let hot water run through for a few seconds. This will remove the last residues.
Descaling without removal
Not every shower head can be easily removed. If you have a built-in rain shower or a permanently mounted concealed shower head, you can first try to descale it in the shower. Here's how to do it:
-
Fill a freezer bag (note the size) with a vinegar-water or citric acid-water solution.
-
Place the shower head in it or pull the bag over the shower head and secure it with a rubber band.
-
Leave the mixture to soak for 1 to 2 hours – or overnight for stubborn limescale.
-
Remove limescale residues with a soft toothbrush or a cloth.
-
Rinse thoroughly with clear water to remove all residues.
For a very large shower head, instead of a freezer bag, you can soak a soft cloth in citric acid and water and wrap it around the affected areas to effectively dissolve the limescale.
Preventing limescale deposits: Our tips
Descaling a shower head is relatively easy, but ideally, you should take the right measures to ensure that as little limescale as possible settles on the fitting – before a thick layer forms and shortens the lifespan of the shower head. Unfortunately, you cannot influence the hardness of the water, but you can still ensure with a few tricks that the surfaces remain limescale-free in the long term.
The regularity of descaling plays a decisive role in prevention. We recommend descaling your shower head preventatively 1 to 2 times a month, so that even the smallest limescale deposits disappear immediately. New residues can also be efficiently avoided by frequent cleaning and polishing. In addition, it is advisable to thoroughly dry the shower fittings after each use, so that no limescale remains when the water evaporates. This significantly reduces the amount of limescale deposits and keeps your shower head functional for longer.
Long-lasting showering comfort thanks to first-class quality
Regular descaling is crucial to maintain the function, appearance and hygiene of your shower head. With the right home remedies and gentle cleaning, limescale deposits can be effectively removed and the nozzles cleared. However, if the material and workmanship are not designed for longevity, even the best care will eventually reach its limits. If the shower head is so heavily calcified that it permanently shows functional losses, it is worth switching to a high-quality model.
Armatron offers well-thought-out solutions for lasting showering comfort. High-quality shower heads made of robust, corrosion-resistant materials impress with easy-care surfaces made of chrome-plated or brushed stainless steel and innovative anti-limescale functions that significantly slow down limescale accumulation. If you value even water pressure, hygienic surfaces and an attractive appearance when showering, you will make the right choice with products from Armatron. This way, you can enjoy a pleasant showering experience every day with high comfort and minimal limescale deposits.
