Starke Kalkablagerungen am Wasserhahn – effektives Entkalken ohne Abschrauben notwendig

Limescale deposits on faucets are a common problem that inevitably appears over time. They not only look unsightly but can also impair water flow and provide a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. The good news is that you don't necessarily have to completely unscrew the faucet to clean it thoroughly. With simple household remedies and a few tricks, it can be done relatively easily. In this guide, we'll show you proven methods for quickly, easily, and hygienically cleaning your faucet. This will ensure a consistent water flow, a limescale-free bathroom, and the long-term functionality of your faucet.

Descaling a faucet without unscrewing it – effective methods for everyday use

The faucet also includes the aerator or spout. This actually refers to the mixing nozzle, often also called an aerator, flow regulator, or flow control valve. Ultimately, this is the part of the faucet from which the tap water flows. Limescale usually forms first on this mixing nozzle, which then impairs the water flow. There are several ways to descale a faucet without unscrewing it – and it's easier than you might think. Stubborn limescale deposits on the mixing nozzle, aerator, or spout can be reliably removed without disassembly. Using the right household products, such as vinegar essence, citric acid, or special descalers for heavy deposits, this can be done effectively and thoroughly.

Cleaning a faucet as a whole

Soak a soft cloth in a mixture of water and vinegar, for example, and wrap it around the faucet spout so that the aerator is completely covered. Let it sit for a while – depending on the level of limescale, even overnight. The vinegar will dissolve the limescale, which can then be gently removed with an old toothbrush or sponge. This way, you can thoroughly clean the faucet without using any tools. Regular use prevents stubborn deposits and ensures that the water flow remains consistent and strong. Since limescale tends to build up particularly on the spout/aerator, there are other ways to descale the faucet without removing it:

Balloon method:

Fill a balloon with vinegar essence or citric acid and stretch it over the tap. Run enough water to completely cover the spout. Let it sit for an extended period.

Freezer bag trick

Instead of a balloon, you can also use a suitably sized freezer bag. Fill it with the appropriate descaling solution, place it over the tap, and secure it with a rubber band. Leave it to soak.

Descaling gel or foam

This product is available exclusively from specialist retailers. Its advantage: it adheres to the surface longer and can be more targeted, especially in heavily calcified areas.

Unscrew and descale the aerator – a step-by-step guide

The aerator can also be effectively cleaned by unscrewing it from the faucet. This method allows you to remove internal limescale and deposits. It's best to use pipe wrenches or a faucet wrench for unscrewing. However, stubborn limescale can sometimes make the aerator difficult to remove. In this case, you should first pretreat it using one of the methods described above. Afterward, it should come off more easily. Then proceed as follows: Disassemble the aerator into its three components: sealing ring, union nut, and screen. Make sure to plug the sink drain beforehand to prevent small parts from falling in. Soak everything for several hours in a mixture of vinegar essence or citric acid and water, and then gently remove all residue with a sponge or toothbrush.

Good to know: To avoid material damage, rubber seals and sealing rings should never be soaked in vinegar or citric acid for too long, as they can quickly become porous.

Rotary handles and the like – they also need maintenance.

Over time, limescale can build up on the outside of the faucet and on the handles or levers. This often becomes noticeable when the controls become harder to operate or even stick. Limescale also leaves its mark visually, appearing as unsightly stains on the surface. At this point, you need to take action. A good first step is to use a cloth soaked in descaling solution to thoroughly clean the affected areas. Depending on the faucet's design, you can also use the balloon or freezer bag method. Repeat the process if necessary until the limescale is completely removed and the handles and levers operate smoothly again. If all these measures fail and the function remains impaired, the faucet will need to be disassembled and thoroughly cleaned, or possibly even replaced. To prevent this, you should clean your faucets regularly. It's definitely time to do so when whitish limescale deposits become visible. A rule of thumb is: Taking the water hardness into account, a thorough cleaning should be carried out at least once a year, but the mixing nozzles should be descaled more frequently. This is the best way to prevent stubborn deposits and malfunctions.
